‘New Wave’ installation for Royal Palace Het Loo

In 2022 we designed a wall installation for the new restaurant of the newly renovated Paleis Het Loo, the royal palace that is a museum. The installation has been developed with and produced by Cor Unum.
The royal palace Het Loo that is open to the public as museum has been recently completely renovated. The old rooms have been restored, a new restaurant has been built and even a completely new building has been made underground, designed by KAAN.
David Derksen received the commission to design a wall installation for the new restaurant designed by Paul Linse. The starting point for the project was a Delft Blue diner plate with the image of the royal palace Het Loo. The main question was to design something that is contemporary but that still makes the link to the rich past of the palace.
In the first phase we experimented with literally removing parts of the Delft Blue image or adding a layer on top. This way, it would only reveal part of the old image but add a contemporary layer to it. This became the main idea of the installation.
The work ‘New Wave’ consists of 54 plates, in a grid of 6 rows of 9 plates. On the lowest plates the original image of the palace is completely visible. Each row above shows less of this image, making it more abstract. The work aims to express the transition of the old palace to the new Het Loo.
